Have you ever heard about flan, churros, cocadas, nieve de garrafa or camote? If not, then we have to talk about the most delicious Mexican desserts ever!

Mexican food is easily famous for their spicy touch, but, the desserts are another layer of the richness of their gastronomy.  The ingredients that stand out the most are cajeta or dulce de leche, vanilla, chocolate and cinnamon.

Let´s start explaining each one of them, so you can know them better.

FLAN: Custard like dessert, made with eggs, sugar, vanilla and caramel. Each bite will literally melt in your mouth. This recipe has been shared for many generations, passing through our abuelitas to daughters and granddaughters. The simple but yet complicated recipe has passed through time with few variations.  You can now find chocolate flavor flan or topped with berries which will give another kind of flavor experience. If you want to try the classic one, make it like this

  • 3/4 cups of sugar
  • 1 package of softened cream cheese
  • 5 large eggs
  • 1 can of condensed milk
  • 1 can of evaporated milk
  • A big splash of Vainilla Molina

  1. Cook and stir sugar over medium heat until melted and golden. Pour into an ungreased glass dish to coat the bottom.
  2. Beat cream cheese, eggs, condensed milk, evaporated milk and Vanilla Molina until well combined. Pour over the caramelized sugar.
  3. Place the dish in a larger baking pan. Pour water into the pan and cook during 60 minutes. This procedure is known as “baño maría”.
  4. Remove the dish and cool down for 1 hour.
  5. Unmold with the help of a knife and invert onto a plate.
  6. Enjoy!

Churros were brought by the Spanish to Mexican territory. Although this dessert is recognized worldwide as Mexican, the adaptation went from being a long strip of fried dough, dusted with sugar and cinnamon, to being filled with dulce de leche, condensed milk or chocolate syrup, known as churros rellenos.

The favorite for all abuelitas! Enjoyed also as a snack, this sweet but not too sweet dessert is often sold by street vendors or in mercados. Made by mixing coconut flakes, eggs, vanilla and then cooked until they are golden brown with a chewy inside.

This Mexican ice cream is made without any dairy! Handmade only with fresh fruit, salt, sugar and ice, crafted in wooden buckets it´s a people´s favorite.

You can find the typical flavors such as strawberry, lemon, vanilla, chocolate but also more extravagant ones such as mango, guava, tamarindo or prune.

If you hear a strong whistle on the street, that means the camote cart is coming! Camotes are sweet potatoes made with homemade caramel, served with jam or condensed milk, this unique dessert may surprise you.

Translation for “happiness” are just that, happiness in a bite. Made with amaranth seeds, honey, vanilla, oats, raisins and nuts, alegrías is one of the oldest and most beloved desserts. Also  enjoyed as a healthy snack.
